Google’s RCS Messaging – Texting on Android Phone is About to Get a Lot Better

Firstly, let us go back to what existed earlier. SMS standing for Short Messaging Service was introduced by Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) a few decades ago. The idea was basically to send a very quick short message which is capped at 160 characters per message from one mobile to another. SMS is provided by cell phone network operators as part of a wireless plan from mobile operators. It has been able to work with any cell phone worldwide. MMS stands for multimedia messaging service. It is an upgraded version of SMS. The technology was very popular during the early 2000s. Where SMS is limited to sending text messages, MMS allows a person to send pictures, videos and audio clips. The maximum size of MMS depends on the mobile device which receives the message and the mobile operator. Rich Communication Services or (RCS) as it is called popularly is an SMS protocol and another upgrade from text messaging with features such as sharing of files or pictures including video calling enabled inside a device through its messaging app intended only for android users. Google had in 2018 announced that it has been working with nearly every mobile operator to adopt RCS protocol. Many features are expected to follow in this Chat, wherein the users can start interacting with each other and would be able to share pictures as well as send and receive messages, both audio and video. Read-receipts function is too enabled. The chat is expected to just bank on the data connection of the user rather than the cellular connection.

We already know that people today are currently in possession of laptops, Personal Computers (PCs) either for texting or speaking or even sharing
their experiences. We are also witnessing mobile services and social networking on the internet are working in tandem by co-existing side by side across platforms and are allowing users to communicate with each other rapidly than ever before. Wouldn’t life get simpler if an enhanced level of communication experience was simple to begin with? Imagine, there is a single address book connecting everything from the mobile or a PC, all starting from the information that the user already has in their mobile address book. There is the advantage of getting in touch with a friend by seeing and understanding if the person is available with RCS. The address book is visible to the user, even if it is being accessed from a mobile or a PC. Users can utilize the facility of voice calls by using RCS. Moreover, while speaking over the phone, the users can share pictures or videos without ending the call. In certain cases, during work, any technical problem may need to be sorted out and may require assistance from the user. By using RCS, the file that is showing the picture of the equipment can also be transferred during the call. The users would be able to see each other while communicating and even can show a live video of where they are located to the person speaking at the other end of the call. Videos that are taken from the internet and saved in the user’s mobile can be transferred during the conversation over the mobile. RCS allows the mobile to send images from the user’s library and transfer them in a live call. Additionally, users can chat with more than one mobile at the same time. With availability of RCS facility, users can access their services from the mobile to PC as well as vice versa and also from PC to PC.

Chat apps are becoming increasingly popular for businesses who want to engage with customers in various meaningful ways. WhatsApp and Facebook are apps that are now free and currently have over 1 billion users are competing with other messenger apps. RCS is seen as a rival to Apple
which has been offering i-message service and it may just operate similar to WhatsApp with operations handled through a data centric network. Story Source: cnet.com
